VHS tapes are the most well known type of video cassette. They were mainly used in the 80s and 90s to record live TV. However, a lot of people also copied footage from their camcorders to create home video compilations, or copies for family members.

Camcorder Tapes
VHS-C / SVHS-C
VHS-C (VHS Compact) are a miniaturised version of VHS. They were designed to allow camcorder to be made smaller and lighter. They have a run time usually of 30-45 minutes in SP (standard play) mode. VHS-C tapes were also designed to fit into an adapter which allowed them to be used on normal VHS VCRs.
Look for these logos:

Video8 / Hi8 / Digital8
Video8 was the original 8mm video tape format. Hi8 was later developed which allowed for better quality recordings to be made. Digital8 was the final iteration of the 8mm format which used digital recording methods for great quality video and audio. The recording length for the 8mm format was usually around 90 minutes for the analogue formats, and 60 minutes for Digital8.

MiniDV / HDV
MiniDV was the first step into the digital word for camcorders. It was a high quality method of recording video and allowed for 1:1 copies to be made when copying digitally. MiniDV tapes have an average recording length of 60 minutes in SP, or 90 minutes in LP.

MicroMV
MicroMV was the final video cassette tape format. Despite it's astonishingly small size, it could hold 60 minutes of video in the MPEG2 format, which is the same as that used on DVDs.

Audio Tapes
Compact Cassette
